Dutch Polder Model Cracking Up
|
|
30 aug 2000 - When recently Mr. John Vinocur of the International Herald Tribune, interviewing Mr. Klaas de Vries- an initiator of the so-called Polder Model, later minister of Social Affairs and Employment and to-day minister of Home Affairs - ventured some nasty questions on the Netherlands' poor performance in areas like industrial employment (low), per capita labour productivity growth (worst of Europe, ex aquo with Greece) and the absurd percentage of government supported disabled (13 percent of labour force in one of Europe's healthiest populations) Mr. De Vries simply skipped the questions: "our Polder Model may be bad for those statistics, but its enormously good for society" (Trib, October 18, 1999).
